A special overnight camp for children who are grieving
Love, Laughter and Leisure are the basic needs of all children, especially those who have experienced the death of a loved one.
Hospice of Washington County’s Camp Hope ‘N’ Cope is an overnight camp experience designed to pair children who are grieving with adults who can offer support and guidance. The adult volunteer acts as a “Big Buddy”, providing individual attention to the child for the entire camp experience. All camp volunteers are specially screened and trained.
“The camp is designed to gently teach coping skills and help build self-esteem and trust. It also offers a safe, comfortable environment for children to express their grief,” stated HWC’s Manager of Bereavement Services Cathy Campbell. “Through interactions with other children and adults, the children experience the universality of loss and learn that they are not alone in their grief.”
Licensed Counselors and Social Workers are part of the camp experience, leading both large and small group discussions on issues such as anger, guilt and letting go. The children also participate in the Camp confidence course to build self-confidence, teamwork and trust. Many other recreational activities are built into this Camp, making it a real camp experience. The children enjoy hiking, arts and crafts, volley ball and basketball, swimming, and even toasting marshmallows around the campfire.
Camp will be held from 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21 at the Mt. Aetna Retreat Center, 21905 Mt. Aetna Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21742. Applications are due no later than July 27.
“If you know of a child who might benefit, please share this information or if you are a caring, compassionate individual who wants to touch the heart of a child who is grieving, please consider volunteering for this special overnight camp,” explained Ms. Campbell.
Special training is provided for the volunteers, and it is essential that volunteers be available for the training/screening which will take place on Wednesday, July 27, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and for the Camp meeting on Wednesday, August 10 at 5:30 pm.
