Big Cork Event Has A Heart for Doey’s House

Big Cork Vineyards are big on great wine and celebrating the things that make life grand. And on May 10, Big Cork Vineyards was the home of a private event which showcased its big heart.

Hosts John and Erin Hershey, Randy and Jennifer Thompson and Brandon and Haven Younger hosted a private dinner party at Big Cork which raised over $50,000 for Doey’s House, the first hospice house in Washington County. The evening featured cuisine from Chef Bryan Voltaggio who cooked on site coupled with the award-winning wine produced by Big Cork Vineyards. Voltaggio is the executive chef and owner of six restaurants including VOLT, Lunchbox, Family Meal, RANGE, and two locations of AGGIO. As a finalist on Top Chef Season 6 and Top Chef Masters Season 5, Voltaggio is the first chef to compete on both Top Chef and Top Chef Masters.

Big Cork Vineyards is centered in the rolling hills of southern Washington County, MD. The vineyard is located a few miles from historic tourist attractions such as the Antietam Battlefield, Harpers Ferry, the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal.

The event was designed, decorated and organized by Haven Younger and Erin Hershey, and the staff of Big Cork helped to execute this exquisite evening. Music was provided by the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Quartet sponsored by Brendan Fitzsimmons and Matthew Mills, guitarist. The floral decorations were creations by Denny Warrenfeltz of Rooster Vane Garden Florists in Funkstown, Maryland, and the photos were provided by Tina Flohr. Invitations and print material were by Katherine McDonough and transportation was by Atlantic Coast Charters.

The proceeds are being donated to Doey’s House for the kitchen/pantry area. Hospice of Washington County has been serving the community for over 37 years in homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes and soon in Doey’s House. Residents of Washington County in need of in-patient pain and symptom management, respite services, or a place to be cared for with compassion and dignity in their last days will no longer need to leave the county once the doors open at Doey’s House which is slated to open in September.
