Hancock Community Life Center Hosts Quilts of Valor

QOV 2

Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor (QOV).” Hospice of Washington County is pleased to provide space in the Hancock Community Life Center to the Mountain Mama Quilters, who meet the last Tuesday of every month to make Quilts of Valor.

According to Bernadette Wagner, HWC’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Community Life Centers provide space, at no cost, to individuals, groups and nonprofits that offer programs that strengthen the community. Wagner said, “Quilts of Valor is a perfect fit for our mission.  This group’s only goal is to recognize and thank military persons and veterans for their service to our country. They maintain, at all times, a neutral position on political and religious issues.”

Andrea Duckworth, the QOV Group Leader, submitted an application to use the Hancock Community Life Center in early April and, within a few short weeks, held their first meeting there on April 25, 2017. Andrea Duckworth’s passion for quilting is palpable, only surpassed by her commitment to honoring veterans.  “Making Quilts of Valor allows me to combine my interests and passions and fills me with satisfaction knowing that I’m making a difference. I think every person who has served our country deserves to be honored.”

According to Duckworth, even non-quilters can get involved in this worthy endeavor. “Any service member or veteran touched by war can receive a quilt and anybody can nominate a recipient.”  Duckworth encouragingly added, “Interested individuals should visit the Quilts of Valor Foundation at QOVF.org to learn more about this organization, nominate a recipient, or make a donation.”

Visitors are welcomed to stop by the Hancock Community Life Center on the last Tuesday of every month, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., to see the Mountain Mama Quilters in action as they apply their quilting skills to honor our military personnel. The Hancock Community Life Center is located in Town Hall at 126 W. High Street, Hancock, MD.
