Frederic H. Kass, III, MD Scholarship Recipients Announced

The 2020 Frederic H. Kass, III, MD Scholarship Recipients Announced

Three students pursuing careers in the healthcare field were recently named as the recipients of the 2020 Frederic H. Kass III, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund. Dr. Frederic Kass is one of the founders of Hospice of Washington County, Inc. (HWC). The organization is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

To honor Dr. Kass’s tireless efforts, HWC’s Board of Directors established the Frederic H. Kass III, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund helps students in Washington County pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Individuals and organizations have given generously to support these scholarships.

This year’s scholarship recipients were Alex Gwizdala, a graduate of Washington County Technical School attending the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in the honors college, majoring in Biological Sciences in order to work in genetic research; Diya Patel, a recent graduate of Williamsport High School who will be attending the University of Maryland, in the honors college majoring in Biology and planning to become a pediatrician; and Lauren Moore, a graduate of Boonsboro High School attending Saint Francis University in the Physician Assistant Science program.

This year’s scholarship process was quite different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviews were conducted virtually, and the scholarship presentations were held outside HWC’s main administrative offices as attendees maintained social distancing. A banner with the recipients’ photos were placed outside of the office; and the scholarship recipients received the scholarship checks, congratulations yard sale signs and gift certificates.

“I am very glad that Hospice of Washington County found a unique way to honor these worthy students while maintaining social distancing,” stated Dr. Kass. “I am grateful to be part of the foundation of HWC’s 40-year history and for the help Hospice has provided my patients and friends. Each year, we are astounded at the caliber of the student applications and the accomplishments of the youth in our area. We were very pleased that we can offer the $2,000 scholarship awards.”

Three scholarships are awarded annually. To be eligible, individuals must be a Washington County, Maryland, resident who is a graduating high school senior and accepted to an accredited college majoring in a healthcare field; or a Washington County, Maryland, resident who is currently a student at an accredited college and majoring in a healthcare field with a minimum GPA of 3.0; or an HWC employee or an immediate family member of an HWC employee.

Scholarship applications must be completed by April 1 of each year and will be awarded in July.

Individuals who are interested in donating to the scholarship fund can call HWC’s Associate Vice President of Mission Advancement, Karen Giffin at 301-791-6360 or email kmgiffin@hospiceofwc.org.
